The PTO: Hidden Heart of Truck Hydraulics

You can buy the best crane in the world, but if the power take-off (PTO) does not suit your gearbox you will end up with a slow, hot, short-lived machine. The PTO is the coupling that draws power from the transmission to drive the hydraulic pump.

What the PTO actually determines

  • Pump speed — hence oil flow, hence how fast the crane moves or the platform rises.
  • Available torque — hence the system's ability to lift under full load.
  • System temperature — a wrong ratio means a pump spinning too fast and oil running hot.

Common types

Side-mount PTO: the most common, fitted to a side aperture on the gearbox. Suits most cranes and platforms.

Rear-mount PTO: fitted behind the gearbox, delivering higher torque, used with large pumps as on refuse compactors and road sweepers.

Clutch-shift / constant-mesh PTO: engageable with the engine running — best where the equipment works for long periods with the truck stationary.

Mistakes we see often

  1. Guessing the ratio. Every gearbox has a defined aperture and speed ratio. Fitting a higher-ratio PTO "because it was available" overspeeds the pump and wears it out early.
  2. Undersizing the oil tank. The practical rule: tank capacity should be at least the pump's one-minute flow, or the oil will not cool.
  3. Long hose runs full of tight bends. Every bend costs pressure and adds heat.
  4. No pressure gauge or thermometer. Without them you learn about the problem when the pump burns out.
  5. Ignoring the relief valve setting. Setting it above the equipment's design pressure breaks cylinders over time.

Signs your PTO is not set up correctly

  • Crane movement is slow although the pump is new.
  • Oil heats quickly and needs frequent cooling.
  • Knocking or whining from the gearbox on engagement.
  • Vibration in the driveline between PTO and pump.

When buying

Always ask for a chassis factory-fitted with a PTO where possible — it saves time and cost and guarantees compatibility. If you already own the truck, send us the gearbox model and serial number and our engineers will identify the matching PTO and its ratio before we issue a quotation.

We supply genuine OMFB and Bezares PTOs for all truck makes, together with matched drivelines and pumps, from our Riyadh warehouse.

Need a quotation for your project?

Send us the specification or tender document — our engineers will review it and return a compliant technical and commercial offer within one working day.
